PageSpeed Service Terminated August 3rd

PremiumNPremiumN Member
edited May 2015 in General

After 4.5 years of service, the PageSpeed Service team regretfully decided that the time had come to re-focus their efforts elsewhere and on 5th May announced that PageSpeed Service will be turned down. If you are using PageSpeed Service, you must change your DNS before 3rd August 2015 or your site(s) will become completely unavailable on that date.

This will affect a LOT of people....

I don't think so. This is the Pagespeed Service (where you point your DNS A records to Google) which is being deprecated. Not to be confused with the Pagespeed Tools.

One of the reasons why I completely stopped using anything from Google is that they frequently decide to discontinue services. ~.~

  • You can easily compile this into your server if you still want to use it, even as the notice mentions they have an Apache module, though be prepared to tune it, can cause some misc. issues with CMS systems out there.

Doubtful. PageSpeed Service was always in an application-only trial phase and it wasn't easy to get approved.

The PageSpeed module that most hosting providers use is a totally different thing.

I only saw problems with this service for users who didn't know what it really was, and benefits that could be had without the matching problems. No loss in my eyes.

  • This is just my personal opinion, so feel free to disagree, but with all the data mining Google does (which has been exposed several times now), I'm concerned every time I hear people using these services. Example: a lot of people use Google's DNS servers (because it's easy to remember???) but seem to forget (or not care?) that every page you visit now makes a request to Google first. Remember, these things don't stop themselves if we keep using them.

    Just my 2 cents.

For those who are interested, it's this kind of stuff I'm talking about:

It was revealed last week, thanks to Edward Snowden, that Google and other US tech companies received millions of dollars from the NSA for their compliance with the PRISM mass surveillance system.

Aside from the Apache module there's one for Nginx too: ngx_pagespeed.

I tried it three years ago but haven't messed with it since.

Oh great, when I was just thinking about setting up one of my sites with it

Orkut, Google Code and now this

Seems like Google doesn't like to offer any service that doesn't give them profit, even if it just needs a couple servers turned on and no maintenance at all

Youtube might be eating all their datacenter resources

So when are you launching your free service?

I use the ngx_pagespeed module (compiled with the latest mainline nginx version) on a few websites and it actually works really well.

We've been using pagespeed (hosted) for over a year or maybe more for http://www.incero.com , it's been awesome. Sucks that they're shutting it down.

Been using ngx_pagespeed for several years now as I integrated it into my Centmin Mod LEMP web stack - http://centminmod.com/nginx_ngx_pagespeed.html

    does wonders https://community.centminmod.com/threads/benefits-of-ngx_pagespeed.1032/ :)

nice admin console backend too https://community.centminmod.com/threads/admin-stats-console-revamp-in-ngx_pagespeed-1-9-32-1-beta.1669/
