Ctrl + C
kill the process?
Open another SSH connection / switch to a different tty and "killall -9 maldet".
Thanks killed it
Just an offtopic advice,
Always start maldet scan with screen If you want to cancel at some point then just do screen -r & then CTRL+C
In screen can also press CTRL + A, then type ":kill" and press enter to kill the process and screen.
Changed title. What commands should I use for screen scan etc etc?

You could install clamav which speeds up maldet scans significantly
I have clamav already installed thanks
