zPanel Control Panel Safe?

CoastHostingCoastHosting Member, Host Rep

Hi All,

I'm just starting out and im wanting to know whats your thoughts on zPanel, i love the template interface and ease of use but i did a bit of googling and there are a few post saying that zPanel is not secure.

Can anyone recommend a great panel thats easy to setup along with style in the looks. cPanel is too expensive for me at this stage.

Thanks

  • I know it's not really been secure in the past but not really sure now.
I use http://centos-webpanel.com/ which is great

I am sure there will be a few people around to update, it's been a while since I have looked at Zpanel but unsafe would be appropriate.

is there anything out there that can handle billing and panel that is open source other than WHMCS?

    http://www.boxbilling.com/ was recently open sourced.

You can find it on https://github.com/boxbilling/boxbilling/

It does appear to be getting some much needed attention.

  • Take a look at ispconfig.

Lately we did not have so many compromised VMs running zPanel, those people did not admit they run it or not many people run it anymore knowing it is not safe.
That being said, I think it got safer recently, all things considered.
But, without a rebuild with security in mind, it is still a ticking bomb, IMO. I would advise using virtualmin which also has billing support in whmcs.

ZPanel is now called Sentora, by the way.

Sentora is a different version by the old developers. In technical terms, they are still 2 different things.

  • Please stay away from ZPanel. It was sold to HostWinds and is not being properly maintained. As mentioned by @Nyr several members of the original team created Sentora, which actually just released a stable version 1.0 a few weeks ago.

Sentora.org , or if feel like using something more established check out Webuzo.

The previous developers migrated to the new fork and the old ZPanel is abandoned, so it's safe to say the project continues there.

Seems like them all rather than some. Why did they drop Zpanel and move to Sentora, anyone know?

We had been working since month's on this release as we merged our installer & did more indepth testing that ever.

It's quite similar to zPanel. Maybe check out the demo? http://demo.sentora.ga/

so i guess it still worries me about security when it's open source, cpanel is just so ugly haha, and i'm forking out for infrastructure i really want a cheap option for web panel that looks good.

Open source can is often is better than closed source. Your code is open to more scrutiny.
