Need a KVM or dedicated box < 60 milliseconds to Hawaii (oceanic.com is a good test host).

My LA GVH/colocrossing vps gets 55ms; I want the lowest latency possible. Probably LA or Hawaii itself.

Minimum specs:

  • 1G RAM
  • 2 cores - remote desktop use, so fair share is fine
  • 10G SSD - or fast HDD
  • 1 TB transfer on a gigabit drop
  • Linux or Windows acceptable

  • 55ms is going to be the best latency you're going to get.

I lived on the Big Island several years and did many tests to providers along the western seaboard. Los Angeles is going to be your best connection. Really anything consistently under 60ms is excellent.

nfoservers.com has a 2core windows VDS in Los Angeles on internap that would work well.

Cool, that's where I'll be as well. I'm assuming the only thing significantly faster would be a reseller in DRFortress Oahu, or perhaps colo'd with one of the local providers like Oceanic or Hawaii Telecom (do they do that?) Any other tips for the Big Island?

I'll keep nfoservers in mind, though hoping to get some additional offers. I just want a virtual desktop for keeping open web/programming/ssh sessions, since I'll be living with off-grid solar and just using a tablet/kb/mouse as a thin client to save power.

  • There is colo in HI available, not cheap though - good pings to Guam and some obscure routes in Asia, not worth the premium over LAX.

  • ClamHost can offer you this.
