WTB: second hand servers

WTB: second hand servers

zhuanyizhuanyi Member
edited August 2012 in General

Looking to buy a dedicated server to colo with one of the DCs in Chicago for a project I have.

Specs would prefer to be the following:

  1. 1U
  2. Dual Xeon Quad Core
  3. 16GB of RAM
  4. 2 SATA hard drive, 200GB or more each
  5. preference given to HP Proliant servers with iLO remote access
  6. Need power cord and rails, i.e., it should be in a ready to use state
  7. hardware RAID card
  8. Will consider offers which is different on point 1-6 if the price is good, I will just buy some stuff off ebay and have the DC to install them for me.

Budget: ??? I am not sure to be honest, would like to hear what the rest of the community says as well. Don't plan to spend anywhere more than 800USD though

And if there is anything that you'd like to suggest on the setup, feel free to post it here as well. Will primarily be used as a VMWare server with 2 Windows 2008 instance running on. No need super fast disk I/O or anything, but should be usable for MS-SQL server.

Feel free to PM me the price if you do not want to make it public. Note that the server will be shipped directly to DC and you will be paid via Paypal only (obviously the address is not a confirmed paypal address, however I guess I have been here long enough to say I am definitely not a scammer trying to get free servers :P)

Thanks a lot!

  • Good luck.. I tried buying from here as well, but noone seemed to sell anything. Your best bet is ebay. I was able to get some awesome deals on there.

Disclosure: I work for Query Foundry LLC.
I own DA International Group Ltd.
  • Thanks @Alex_LiquidHost, I tried to get something off ebay but most of them only ship to confirmed shipping address, which make no sense in my case, so I figured I could try my luck here.

  • @zhuanyi In that case, speak to some of the suppliers/sellers directly and explain it to them. Maybe pay by bank wire transfer, they just don't want to get scammed/chargedbacked.

I don't think blade servers is really what you need based on your requirements.

  • Would you consider a server that is 2u?

  • Here's something to consider:

    http://www.servermonkey.com/dell-poweredge-1950-4-port-configure-to-order/

Configuring this server with your specs brings it to a total of: $569.99. If you need rails then it is: $629.99

Build your own.. these old prebuilts are great but I've seen from experience building your own is always best.

Example : Buy an second hand bare-bones server, then buy all the parts separately, and build it up. It gives you flexibility to customize and mix and match, normally ends up with better price/performance.

    Newegg is your best friend.

That's not what you want - look at your original post.. its also hella-old (like way too old to purchase, you don't want anything pre-07 imo)

That's the thing, I do not want to build a server in Canada and pay 13% of GST and send it to US (and probably need to pay US import tax as well) when I could buy the server in US and colo in US with no tax payable...

Send the money to someone in the U.S to buy the parts, build it for you and send it to the DC?

It depends on the seller but I never shop on craigslist... I found a sweet deal on Kijiji a while back but I'm waiting for his replies back. Once he does I could give you his contact details. He has some really good deals.

  • earlearl Member

@zhuanyi said: do people ship items on craigslist

There use to be warnings all over craigslist to deal locally only!! lots of scammers on there especially during the holidays

  • You may want to look around at CedarPC.

like server monkey i guess? Brandon you are based in Canada right? How did you get the server in Datashack set up or you are just renting there if it is not a business secret?

You buy the items, ship to DC from seller, pay DC to build. Many DC's will build it for a small fee.

800 is probably the max, but cheaper the better of course (provided the specs are met)

    Used G7/RAID/DRIVES from SERVERMONKEY (http://www.servermonkey.com/hp-proliant-dl165-g7-configure-to-order.html)

    All other parts from Newegg

I'm sure anyone will point out my mistakes.. I'm really tired so give it a few hours and see if anyone can find an issue, also do some research yourself.. but I think it should work. I'm planning on building something very similar soon.

    I work for Nodisto.

  • Yeah, the shiping is going to cost more, as it is buying the items seperately and they can be found for cheaper on ebay.

    However, personally I would go with something similar to: 2x http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-Quad-Core-L5420-2-5GH-12MB-133-3-SLARP-/221096938358?pt=US_Server_CPUs_Processors&hash=item337a678b76#ht_500wt_1288 - 36$ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-490-GU083-Motherboard-DUAL-XEON-Systemboard-LGA771-TESTED-/180936764467?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2a20abec33 - 39$

Not absolutely sure about chasis though, but something along the line of this could work probably: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-PowerEdge-R200-1U-Server-Case-Chassis-Power-Supply-CX251-XH225-/270836574907?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0f1e2abb#ht_1961wt_1037

    RAM: http://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-8X2GB-DDR2-MEMORY-RAM-PC2-5300-ECC-FBDIMM-DIMM-/140505472432?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item20b6c75db0

The RAID card would be additional 90-120$

The HDDs theirself would be around 40$ each for enterprice SATA 250GB. However you might be able to find some decent WD RE3 in warranty at 30$ each.

Can not guarantee that the above configuration would work, but something along that lines would be quite cheap and good. You can get this configuration pre-built at around 300-350 with HDDs included and a shitty onboard RAID, that might do the trick for you.
