Anybody here using Vultr's Tokyo location?

aglodekaglodek Member
edited January 2015 in Providers

Interested in spinning up VM's in Vultr's Tokyo location. Heard good things about their CPU speed and bad things about their Sydney location (network issues). Nothing about Tokyo, hence my question: anyone here with a history at their Tokyo location? Any review/comments?

Linode has good Japan location, I have their 1024 MB plan there and it works well. Vultr's isn't great but usable according to https://vpsboard.com/topic/3688-digitalocean-vs-vultr-the-asian-face-off/

  • I quite can't see any network issues so far except to the mainland China.

Yeah pricing looks great at https://www.conoha.jp/, but required some reviews about their service quality.

They seems to be using KVM and control panel also looks great.

Not sure what's your point, I wasn't saying it's bad or anything, just corrected the posted price estimate.

Conoha only very recently gained an English version of their website, and even now, if you click "Help", it's not translated yet. Also it is only cheaper than Linode since not long ago as well, because of the JPY crash, it went down almost as much as the rouble. :)

  • any test ip for this conoha?

  • I've had a VPS in their Tokyo, Japan and don't seem to have any problems with connectivity (compared to my VPS in Singapore with DigitalOcean). Take a look at the ServerBear benchmarks to see the comparison. There's also not that many hosts to choose from that are in Asia and Japan specifically. This is because of the high cost of bandwidth and laws about having a server (so they can spy on you).

    Wat??

  • @aglodek said:

I should've been more specific when I said "laws about having a server (so they can spy on you)". What I was referring to was if you want to have a server in China hosting a website, you need to submit an application to the Chinese government detailing information about your website and the purpose of it. If they accept you, you get what's called an ICP license number which needs to be made public on your website or you'll get shutdown. It's also another way for the Chinese government and Chinese ISP's to censor what their citizen can view online. Even though a website is not hosted in China (and therefore doesn't need a ICP license), it is still blocked.

  • @aglodek not bad in terms of network performance. However remember to enable the option "Stop the VPS if bandwidth limit is reached", otherwise you'll be scratching your head over double digit numbers.

It's disabled by default. That said they did pay me 15$ credit for the outages in their Australian network.
