Hi LET'er,

Looking for backup solutions and try Hetzner. Snap one box a month ago and surprised on how this box perform only for 26 Euro/month.

So they offer this kind of specs:

Intel Core i7-3770
2 x HDD 3,0 TB SATA
16GB DDR3
Price: 26.5 Euro/month. With VAT 31 Euro.

CPU PassMark:

All Thread Rating: 9391
Single Thread Rating: 2069

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-3770+%40+3.40GHz

Setting up the HDD as SoftRAID 1 using their VNC installations. First disk is around 12K power on hours, and the other one is 7k power on hours.

Their network is pretty good:

  • That's a good price, did you get it at the Serverbörse?

    Yes https://robot.your-server.de/order/market

Edit: all prices listed there are with VAT.

  • @edan

If I'm not having morning blindness, that deal is EUR 36

It runs on a reverse auction system, so he could've grabbed it when it was 31 EUR quite easily.

Current 36 euro is with VAT. I got the box when its stated as
    fix prices.

  • So it's not possible to get 26 Euro anymore?

Let say current price is 36 Euro and without VAT than the price is around 30 Euro.

  • Do I have to pay VAT if I'm not European nor living in Europe?

No. You'll need to open up a ticket with them to get the VAT removed.

Wow! That being said, I only have to pay ~31euro for the 36euro server on the bid?

No you don't. If you are not from Europe, then they never charge you VAT.

The server bidding works like, it has a listing price, and if one purchase this server, the prices get raised, and if no one make purchases, prices drop every some hours.

You certainly have plenty of patience doing that! :)

Yes I do it manually so at least enough to spend a cup of coffee :)

  • I had the i7-2600 and it kept dropping off the network, at first I thought it was down to DHCP (which the centos VNC installer used) but even when the IP was statically set it was happening.

It was very strange as I had a VM running on that machine and the VM was still pingable when it happened.

Maybe I just got unlucky and got a duff one or maybe centos had a dodgy NIC driver.

you got a virtual mac setup right?

Yep it was setup properly, I ended up using the 14day guarantee and refunding it in the end, as it wasn't the only issue with that box (It was delivered with a failing HDD).

Hats off to hetzner support though they were very quick and responsive, even connected a KVM the 2nd time it fell of the network and the replaced the HDD within 15mins of me providing the logs to show it was faulty.

Would probably consider using Hetzner again, I think I might have just gotten a Lemon in terms of the actual server.

Do they replace the bad drives with brand new ones? I'm just curious.

  • Afraid I didn't make a note of how new the drive was, it was working and that's all I cared about.

Several years of using Co-Lo and not one drive problem, in the past 2 weeks I've had 2 Dedi's in 2 different DC's have drive issues.

Ironically had a DL120 G7 in co-lo for over 2 years using s/w raid fine, get one as a dedi with H/W raid controller and it's the H/W raid controller that causes the problem :P (Disk I/O errors but controller reporting all ok)

That said can't moan to much, the bandwidth Online/Hetzner/Ovh give away with their Dedi's would have cost me an absolute fortune in co-lo and that's even before we get to the hardware costs.

Fair enough. I was gonna use one of their auction servers purely for backup purposes, but by the looks of it I might just use Backupsy or similar service. Any recommendations?

They did it for me. Both drives had a lot of errors, they promptly replaced them with brand new drives :)

I used to use a Backupsy VPS, then later moved to using their hosted R1soft/Idera for backing up my zimbra server.

The other VM's I host are mainly personal or for friends so aren't as important, but if I have the space I do still try and keep backups just because rebuilding them is a Pain.

OVH are doing free setup today by the looks of things, so might be worth look at OVH/SOYS

At the end of the day Hetzner let you cancel the order within the first 14 days on the auction servers, their support will only assist with hardware issues as it's an unmanaged service but in terms with interacting with them for that they're usually quite responsive.

They're a cheap provider, you get quite a bit for your money so don't be surprised not to get brand new drives, arguably if the data's that important you should have backups in multiple locations anyway... Maybe if budget allows get something in Hetzner and also a cheap box elsewhere.

I think it is a pandemic, we had our backup server in LeaseWeb and drives were dropping out like flies (well, it had many, to be fair).
And they did not replace anything else, except the drives even though, it should have been obvious after the 10th failure something is wrong in other places too.

  • Am I correct in assuming the auctions with "fixed price" do not drop in price? But only the ones with reduction in xx:xx will?

Thanks. Some of them seem like decent deals, but some of them seem rather expensive i.e. a 2GB machine for 25Euros? (or is it just me?).
