service providers: What tools do you use to run your hosting business?

ditlevditlev Member, Top Host, Host Rep

Hi guys,
I'd love to hear more about what tools you guys are using to run your hosting business.

Apart from the servers/infrastructure - what are you currently using?

Examples below, but please add your own tools in reply.

  • Virtualization like OnApp, SolusVm, Parallels or Virtualizor etc
  • Shared hosting control panels like cPanel and directadmin?
  • Sitebuilders?
  • Email outsourced?
  • Billing systems like whmcs/blesta/hostbill?
  • ERP systems like Freeagent.com?
  • Merchant accounts, paypal, stripe, 2checkout, worldpay?
  • Templates from themeforest etc?
  • SSL certs?
  • Analytics from mixpanel, kissmetrics?
  • Monitoring from serverdensity, monitis?
  • Loadbalancers?
  • Affiliate scripts?
  • Where do you buy marketing?
  • Any other tools you use to run your business?

I'd love to get your input.

Thanks!

:)

Maybe someone should actually build the simulator, so summer host kids could go play that instead.

    Thanked by 1ATHK
  • Be good for them and for Sim nuts like me.

    Not mentioned yet: FraudRecord.

  • @ditlev I think you need to take your vps plan and go do some research seriously

  • @ditlev If you're Onapp's ditlev, a signature would really come in handy when asking questions like these.

A hammer to smash myself in the face with everytime solusvm fails to cancel or suspend a server despite several "we fix it" confirmations, or gives me a big green light saying "success" and I know I have to check anyway.

I use a screw driver to rip up my toenails with every bug a new whmcs version brings that I find a week after installing.

Finally a chisel for my shin bones everytime I see that not a single fuck has been given about xen this year by soluslabs.

cPanel is pretty nice though... :)

My wall of text senses are tingling!

Tip, maybe get rid of the Java terminal in SolusVM and replace it with something more mobile friendly (html 5)

Soluslabs have already stated this is impossible. (for that I stick needles in my feet)

Hopefully OnApp has some more intelligent programmers ;) ..

I dont see the need to use Java for something that can easily be done in almost any other language.. shame on you SolusVM

Now with extra DDoS and a lower barrier of entry.

  • @ditlev are you looking for a new product to make or something ? Since you have been a webhost yourself, you would know better as you have managed many hosting companies.

  • As long as you know what you're doing I don't think it should require much tools like that.
