What version of KVM is your host running?

I see 0.12.1 is popular... anyone actually using something higher?

I only see one using 2.0.0.

Hmm...

Comments

  • Let me guess, the 2.0.0 is one not using solusvm?

Can a KVM VPS customer find out? If so, how?

  • Do you mean which QEMU version?

@emg: check the model name in /proc/cpuinfo

    model : 13
model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6)

    Hmm?

  • @linuxthefish: guess it's different under Debian?

model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 1.1.2

  • model : 13
model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6)

    :)

  • Well I guess there must be a different way to tell under Redhat hosts. I suppose one could check what version of QEMU comes with RHEL 6.

    BlueVM:

    model : 2
model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 1.1.2

    model : 6
model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 2.0.0

    Both (different) Buffalo nodes.

  • model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 2.0.0

We are also running different versions, some servers are stable for 2+ years and didnt need upgrades, that being said, as soon as there is an issue with a server, the upgrade also takes place.

  • BlueVM runs a mix of QEMU 1.5.0 (ships with Ubuntu 13.10), 1.7.2 (Custom compiled for our old CentOS nodes by me because 0.12.1 is ANCIENT), 2.0.0 (ships with Ubuntu 14.04), an one node running 1.3.0 (Debian 7, setup when we had to rebuild a node). Newer tends to be better. When we went from 0.12.1 to 1.7.2 on the CentOS nodes, load average dropped by a LOT. More efficient virtualization by newer versions I guess.
Most hosts using SolusVM will be using 0.12.1 though, as Solus only supports CentOS 6 for KVM, and that's what ships with CentOS 6. I might share my script for compiling QEMU 1.7.2 on CentOS but i would need to make it pretty. It's not pretty right now.

@Magiobiwan: "... but i would need to make it pretty": it is always good to make the world a little bit more beautiful ;-)

First KVM provider on a VPS running Debian 6.0.6:

    model : 13

model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6)

Second KVM provider on a VPS running Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS:

    model : 2

model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 1.5.0

  • @emg Looks like the second one is from us, or someone else who doesn't use SolusVM and decided to use Ubuntu 13.10 on the node. The first one is on a CentOS node, running CentOS 6 and qemu-kvm 0.12.1.

You're right, the second one is from BlueVM. The first one is from FrontRangeHosting (now part of Wiresix/Total Server Solutions).

  • model : 2

    ???

  • @awson Looks like your KVM has host-CPU Passthrough enabled, and that the HN is running an E3-1235 CPU. I'm not sure why they'd be running E3's for KVMs, as the possible memory density is MUCH lower on an E3 than E5's.
