WebAfrica VPS - 2 months for less than 1USD
Hi Gals and Lads
I found this offer in my mailbox today
http://www.webafrica.co.za/hosting/vps/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=hosting_newsletter_nov_13
TL;DR; 2 months for less than 1USD, default cheapest package around 10USD
We are using this provider for our South African DNS PoP and they are pretty nice.
They have pretty good connectivity (http://bgp.he.net/AS36943)
Cheers and enjoy

they not accept for paypal
@blackeye - so?
I've asked via Live Chat, and answered nicely by Yusuf, R99 ~ $10 USD, the currency is Rand/Zar if someone did't know yet
i am student and i not have a mastercard/visa for pay it
@gbshouse you probably just did them a very bad favour. Imagine the abuse influx...
@rds100 - nah
@gbshouse, can you show me a trace to zol.co.zw ?
@jimpop
Yep. That's my issue with African providers... they all (except for vps.co.za, which leverages MWeb) peer with London. :-(
Edit: and it gets worse, the further north you go, until you cross the Mediterranean.
Wow, that's quite cheap for an African provider.
@jimpop - I would assume that you use African provider for African connectivity
Impossible. It would take 20+ African VPSes to locally cover all of Africa, otherwise it's best to stick with London.
I think his point is that different African providers connect with each other only in London.
Ordered one for 4p apparently. Awaiting activation.
@rm_ - it all depends, we have picked this provider because presence in NAPAFRICA and CINX. Local connectivity is pretty good but it can be different since we are announcing our own IPs over BGP
Compare that 192ms to the 46ms from Vps.co.za
Only 10gigs of traffic? That's a bit depressing.
Bandwidth is expensive in Africa, just like in Asia
Actually it looks to be an order of magnitude worse than in Asia.
And 50 cents a GB is beyond bad. Perhaps that is why paypal cant be used.
Interesting that the default user isn't root (though it's sudo-enabled so it doesn't matter much) and they default to port 5252 instead of 22.
Those tests to zol.co.zw is interesting.
Some other Zimbabwean sites route correctly within South Africa, from Cape Town to J'oburg to Zimbabwe. But it just seems like most routings aren't optimized for Eastern African countries on the SEACOM cable side from Cape Town.
For example my server in the MTN DC in Cape Town:
Traceroute to zol.co.zw:
traceroute to zol.co.zw (196.27.110.18), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets 1 41.204.208.155 (41.204.208.155) 0.027 ms 0.008 ms 0.007 ms 2 41.204.208.99 (41.204.208.99) 1.927 ms 1.971 ms 1.936 ms 3 41.204.206.36 (41.204.206.36) 0.633 ms 0.784 ms 0.727 ms 4 41.203.6.41 (41.203.6.41) 0.653 ms 0.674 ms 0.762 ms 5 ge5-0-0.gw2.cpt1.za.mtnbusiness.net (196.30.176.34) 0.672 ms 0.706 ms 0.704 ms 6 196.7.21.18 (196.7.21.18) 0.546 ms 0.441 ms 0.437 ms 7 tb-cr-1.za--tb-cr-2.za-a.mtn.net (196.44.31.158) 1.353 ms 1.477 ms 1.550 ms 8 am-cr-2.nl--tb-cr-1.za-a.mtnns.net (196.44.31.213) 157.010 ms ls-cr-2--tb-cr-1.uk-b.mtnns.net (196.44.31.113) 145.082 ms am-cr-2.nl--tb-cr-1.za-a.mtnns.net (196.44.31.213) 157.105 ms 9 ls-cr-1.uk--ls-cr-2.uk-a.mtnns.net (196.44.31.156) 144.439 ms ls-cr-1.uk--am-cr-2.nl-a.mtnns.net (196.44.31.154) 156.690 ms ls-cr-1.uk--ls-cr-2.uk-a.mtnns.net (196.44.31.156) 144.419 ms 10 ls-pr-1.uk--ls-cr-1.uk-a.mtn.net (209.212.111.83) 144.964 ms 144.902 ms 157.456 ms 11 g0-0-1.luk-pr1-th0.liquidtelecom.com (195.66.224.68) 144.596 ms 156.994 ms 144.629 ms 12 pe1-tho-G0-0-1-0.liquidtelecom.net (5.11.10.106) 333.812 ms 346.440 ms 334.177 ms 13 p1-tho-TenG0-0-0-0.liquidtelecom.net (5.11.10.102) 334.833 ms 334.119 ms 334.586 ms 14 P2-JHB-pos8-1-1.liquidtelecom.net (46.17.232.43) 339.732 ms 327.337 ms 327.146 ms 15 46.17.233.105 (46.17.233.105) 326.239 ms 338.291 ms 326.242 ms 16 P2-HRE-g1-1-7.liquidtelecom.net (46.17.232.76) 394.106 ms 394.555 ms 394.290 ms 17 46.17.232.37 (46.17.232.37) 335.066 ms 335.857 ms 335.593 ms 18 46.17.233.70 (46.17.233.70) 334.340 ms 346.909 ms 347.389 ms 19 zol-ecoweb.zol.co.zw (196.201.17.137) 348.614 ms 336.222 ms 348.521 ms 20 neptune.zol.co.zw (196.201.1.120) 339.093 ms 354.404 ms 338.984 ms 21 * * *
As you can see it goes via Cape Town -> UK -> JHB -> Zimbabwe
But some other sites route correctly, but it does go via Mweb (probably peering). But I think Mweb has optimized their routing for Africa, because of Internet Streaming of DSTV into Africa.
For example to Mozambique from Cape Town:

Webafrica is using an IS datacenter in Cape Town, so they are using a Teraco DC in Cape Town, which is pretty much next door to the MTN CT DC. http://www.teraco.co.za/locations/cape-town.html
The bandwidth is kinda shocking with these VPS offerings, considering Mweb's VPS offerings give you "unlimited" bandwidth ( http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/2/Business/Hosting/Virtual_Hosting.aspx ), but they might let you sign a contract. Mweb is super sneaky with things like that. And I don't know if you can directly get a VPS with them if you live outside SA. And that WA offers unlimited on their shared hosting. So 10GB per month is crap for minimum. But the cheapest is still the offerings from http://vpsnine.com , which uses Hetzner's Cape Town DC = MTN CT DC
